Town of Milan: New Government Off and Running

January 9, 2010

On January 1, 2010, Justice Kenneth Kremenick swore in the newly elected officials for the Town of Milan. A small audience of supporters and attendees were present.

Once the new Board took its seat, its members undertook the first official duty of the year, a reorganization meeting. This was begun by naming various positions and appointments and, where appropriate, setting salaries for these. Of note were the boards, committees and appointments not made by the new Board—i.e. the Board of Assessment Review and appointment of its members, the Conservation Advisory Council and appointment of its members, and appointment of a representative to the Wappingers Creek Watershed Intermunicipal Council. (We, at Milan Insider, are hopeful that these omissions were mere oversights by the new Board. Since the agenda for the January 11th meeting has just this day been posted on the Town’s web site and contains an item labeled generally as “appointments,” we further hope these boards, committees and appointments will be made then.

(At this time, we also make mention of some changes that have appeared on the Town’s web site since the installation of the new administration that do raise some questions, namely: the only partial updating of the various officials and appointees at Town Hall, which leaves us puzzled as to why some names were amended and included and others were not; and the new verbiage contained within the description of Milan’s Town Board meetings—“ The public is invited and included in discussion at the discretion of the chair”—which leaves us wondering if the new Board will be welcoming of the public’s input to the governing of our Town.)

Next on the agenda were:

- The appointment of Pattision, Koskey, Howe and Bucci CPAs P.C. as Accountants to the Town.

(Milan Insider would like to point out that though the Bookkeeper had resigned in December, 2009—resulting in the third Bookkeeper to have tendered a resignation during the prior administration’s two-year term—the position was not filled despite this vacancy. It is our understanding that this most recent resignation was prompted by a “hostile work environment” created by the prior Board’s “special advisor.”)

- Magnus Reichelt was appointed Assessor to fill the spot vacated by Milan’s new Supervisor, Bill Gallagher.

Following this, the new Board directed that a letter be sent to Gellert & Klein terminating any and all legal services to the Town as of 1/01/2010; and that all files be transferred to the newly appointed Attorney to the Town, John Greco, Esq.

The new Town Board then appointed William Fiederlein to the Planning Board, replacing Mary Anne Hoffman; and re-appointed Peter Goss as Planning Board Chair.

The meeting then concluded.
